Wedged in between, Nepal, India, Tibet and Bhutan is the little State of Sikkim. Darjeeling, which we use as the base for our trek, is the largest Indian town near the border with Sikkim. Our walk here takes to the view point close to Guiche-la 4940m close to Kangchenjunga 8586m the world's third highest mountain.
We begin our journey in Darjeeling. Darjeeling has a fascinating mixture of cultures, including Hindu, Buddhist and that left behind by the British Raj in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We explore Darjeeling, its bazaars, monasteries, Raj relics, the Tibetan Centre and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute before heading off to Yoksum in Sikkim to begin our trek.
Sikkim is a naturalist's paradise. Because of its low warm valleys and the high alpine region, there is a variety of wild life, butterflies and ferns, palms, orchids and forests of rhododendron. Our trek takes us through a Tibetan refugee village (Chokka) and forests to the alpine ridge of Dzongri, from where we have a spectacular view of the world’s third highest mountain Kangchenjunga, Kabru and Pandim. We continue our trek to Lamini and on to the view point near Guiche-la 4940m from where we look straight up to Kangchenjunga. We return by a slightly different route as far as Chokka from where we retrace our tracks to Yoksum. From Yoksum we drive to Darjeeling and fly home.
